'Of Cautious
Melody'
Emily Dickinson 2
A daguerrotype of Emily Dickinson taken at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in December 1846, or early 1847. The only fully-authenticated portrait of the poet after childhood.
This ironic masterpiece is one of the profoundest poems approaching the great issues of faith and doubt. I have set it as an equally ironic German Chorale, and in 5/4 time to embrace Dickinson's complex metre and unique dashes. This setting further combines the two versions of the poem dating from 1859 and 1861; for baritone (or male voice choir) and organ (or piano without the foot pedals). Among my original compositions, this is the only one to date for the organ.
