Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, by Luise Seidler (Weimar, 1811)

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) is the towering figure of German literature, and his poetry, often emblematic of German Romanticism, has frequently been the source for lieder by the greatest composers. Among my original compositions, this is a new setting for tenor and piano of his haunting 'Die schöne Nacht', written in 1809. [N.B. the ossia F4 for the high A flat 4 (written A flat 5) note in Bar 42]. For a good translation of the poem into English, see here.
