'Of Cautious
Melody'
A. E. Housman 2
This is a setting of A. E. Housman's plangent poem LVIII from his cycle, A Shropshire Lad (1896). It is written for baritone and harp, and it employs the old pentatonic scale (C,D,E,G,A, & C) so suitable for such pastoral regretfulness. Though classical, it also has a folk song character.
